What the article covers: which qualifications and certificates are required, whether Ukrainian/Uzbek certificates are recognized

A welder in Poland can't just say "I know how to weld" and expect a rate of 40+ zł/h. Almost all production employers require formal proof of qualification, and it's exactly which document a candidate holds and which standard it was issued under that determines whether they get hired at all and at what rate. Here's a look at which qualifications employers actually ask for at interviews, whether Ukrainian and Uzbek certificates are recognized, and what to do if there's no official document yet.

What document actually proves a welder's qualification in Poland

A welder's qualification in Poland, and across the EU generally, is confirmed by a separate examination certificate under the PN-EN ISO 9606 standard: part 1 for steel, part 2 for aluminium and aluminium alloys, parts 3–5 for copper, nickel and titanium. This is the current standard that replaced the older PN-EN 287, although some companies and job ads still reference the old norm.

The certificate isn't issued by the employer, but by an accredited certification body after a practical exam: the candidate welds a test sample using a specified method, position and material thickness, the sample is then checked for defects (visually, or with ultrasonic or radiographic testing for critical structures), and only then is the document issued. In Poland, these exams are administered by several types of bodies:

  • Instytut Spawalnictwa (IS), a Polish institute accredited by PCA, EWF and IIW. It formally meets international requirements, but some employers prefer to see a certificate specifically from TÜV, so having only an IS certificate can sometimes make finding a job harder than expected.
  • TÜV (most often TÜV Rheinland Polska), a certificate that most production companies treat as the de facto standard, especially if the output is exported to Germany. Valid for 3 years.
  • UDT (Urząd Dozoru Technicznego), which mainly certifies not welders themselves but supervision of welding production: code compliance checks, WPS documentation, visual weld inspection. This document is needed by engineers and quality managers, not a line welder.
  • DNV and GL, seen less often, mostly in shipbuilding and on projects for Scandinavian or British clients.

A certificate is always tied to a specific welding method, material, thickness and weld position, it's not a universal pass for everything. If a welder is qualified for MIG on steel in the flat position but a job requires TIG on aluminium in the overhead position, the old certificate doesn't count, a new exam or an extension of the current scope is needed.

Is a certificate required for every job

No. A formal ISO 9606 certificate is legally required wherever the structure falls under code-regulated supervision: steel structures under PN-EN 1090-2 (execution classes EXC2–EXC4), pressure equipment under the PED directive, process pipelines, railway products. Without a valid certificate, a welder isn't permitted to weld such joints, and no serious employer will risk it, since their own production certification is on the line.

Where there's no such regulated supervision (small-scale metal production, repair work, some installation tasks), an employer may settle for an on-site practical test: 15–30 minutes of welding a sample, assessed by a foreman or quality engineer, with no formal document required. That's where entry-level jobs without a certificate, paying 23–28 zł/h, come from. But once rates reach 38 zł/h and above, in most cases the employer will ask to see the actual document, not just the skill.

Is a Ukrainian certificate recognized

What matters here isn't citizenship, but which standard and which center issued the document.

If the certificate was issued by an accredited center specifically under the EN ISO 9606 standard (such exams are run, for example, by TÜV Thüringen Ukraine, the Paton DTSE, and other internationally accredited centers), it's formally valid in Poland and across the rest of the EU exactly as if the exam had been taken locally. It's the same international standard, just with the exam center located in a different country. This route is popular because it's usually cheaper and faster than taking the exam in Poland: getting such a certificate typically takes about 1.5–2 weeks from application.

A certificate issued without reference to ISO 9606, under a purely national domestic system with no international accreditation, won't be enough to convince an employer in Poland on its own. That doesn't mean it's not worth traveling with such a document: it proves real experience and can support a candidate during a practical test, but it won't work as formal grounds for a position under regulated supervision. In that case there are two options: take an ISO 9606 exam at an accredited center before leaving, or confirm qualifications on site in Poland, which staffing agencies often arrange as part of employment.

Is an Uzbek certificate recognized

The principle is the same: what decides isn't the country of issue but the standard. Uzbekistan's national certification system ("Uzstandard") operates under its own internal procedures and is recognized abroad only within the scope of specific bilateral mutual recognition agreements. If the document was issued as a national Uzbek certificate with no link to ISO 9606, in Poland it will most likely be treated as proof of experience, not as a formal qualification.

The practical solution is the same: look for an international ISO 9606 exam at an accredited center (some training centers already run such exams jointly with international certification bodies), or take the exam directly in Poland after arrival. The second route takes longer and costs more, since it adds waiting time for a job willing to take on a candidate without a certificate during the preparation period.

How much it costs and how long a certificate is valid

Exam cost depends on the number of methods, material thickness and the center administering the exam, market rates are typically a few hundred zloty per method per position. A PN-EN ISO 9606-1 (steel) certificate is valid for 3 years from the exam date, provided qualification is confirmed every 6 months by the employer or a responsible welding engineer. For other materials (aluminium, copper, nickel, titanium) validity is often shorter, 2 years, worth checking against the specific part of the standard listed on the certificate.

An important point: if a welder hasn't worked with a given method for a long stretch during the certificate's validity period, a new employer is entitled to require a repeat practical test when changing jobs, even if the document is formally still valid. This isn't a violation on the employer's part, it's standard verification practice: the document confirms the exam was passed at some point, not that the skill is current right now.

What to do if there's no certificate

  • Look for entry-level jobs where the employer tests the skill on site without requiring a formal document, and arrange in parallel to take the exam during employment, some production facilities do this.
  • Take the ISO 9606 exam at an accredited center before departure, usually cheaper and faster than waiting for an exam slot in Poland.
  • Check whether the staffing agency offers help with certification as part of employment, and get it in writing who covers the exam cost and what happens if the first attempt fails.
  • Don't agree to offers asking for payment for an "international certificate" without a real practical exam: such a document won't hold up to verification on an actual production floor.
